Dearborn Divine Child remains the top-ranked team in the Associated Press Division 4 football poll, carrying a 6-0 record into the final stretch of the regular season.
The Falcons earned four first-place votes and 40 total points in the Week 7 AP rankings published Tuesday, Oct. 6. Goodrich (6-0) sits second with 36 points.
Divine Child won the Division 4 state championship on Nov. 28, 2025, at Ford Field, edging Hudsonville Unity Christian 23-22 for the program's first title in 40 years, according to MHSAA’s official championship results and the school’s championship account.
Through six games this fall, the Falcons have outscored opponents 208-70, according to MaxPreps. Their most recent win came Friday, Oct. 2, a 27-6 victory over Toledo St. John's Jesuit.
Junior quarterback Drew Sheridan has led the offense. The left-handed passer completed 73 of 88 attempts (83 percent) for 1,450 yards and 15 touchdowns with zero interceptions through five games, plus 230 rushing yards, as reported by the Detroit Free Press on Oct. 1.
Sheridan opened the season by completing 22 of 25 passes for 341 yards and five touchdowns in a state championship rematch against Unity Christian.
"I've got to step up," Sheridan told the Free Press after practice Sept. 28. "I've got to play better and do it for all of my brothers." His comments came as the team dealt with injuries.
The Falcons were missing several players when the Free Press reported on the team Oct. 1. The newspaper reported that receiver Amere Damphie was out for the season with a torn medial collateral ligament in his knee. Receiver and defensive back Giancarlo Vitti had broken his fibula, and starting left guard Nico Schwartz had broken his hand. At that time, Vitti and Schwartz were expected to return during the season.
Head coach Chris Laney, in his fifth season leading the program, had a 40-13 record as of Sept. 29 and had guided Divine Child to four consecutive playoff appearances, a school first, according to the Detroit Lions. The Lions named Laney their High School Football Coach of the Week for Week 5, an honor that included a $1,000 donation to the football program.
The Falcons host University of Detroit Jesuit for homecoming on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. They close the regular season at home against Lumen Christi Catholic on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., according to the school’s athletics calendar.
