Dearborn’s newest City Beautiful junior commissioners took an oath Tuesday, Oct. 27, pledging to help keep their schools and community clean.

The students attended a breakfast hosted by the City of Dearborn, according to a Dearborn Public Schools announcement on X.

The post’s accompanying photo descriptions show students learning about recycling and making clay balls containing native plant seeds. A Smith Middle School student also gave a presentation about native plants.

What the junior commission does

The Junior City Beautiful Commission program encourages students to reduce litter and care for the environment at their schools. The city also holds annual spring events on school campuses, according to a June city announcement.

Mayor Abdullah Hammoud appoints the volunteer members of the broader City Beautiful Commission.

The city’s fiscal year 2024 annual report described the commission’s work on school cleanup parades and tree plantings. It also described collaboration with the Department of Community Relations on education about recycling, litter and flood management.

The commission’s other programs include Residential Standard of Excellence recognition for well-maintained homes and yards, along with recognition for sustainable landscaping, according to a July city announcement.

More information about the commission and its programs is available on the city’s City Beautiful page.
